ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (5)

What we are trying to do is to awaken people’s consciousness towards redirecting their energy into creating economic activities using the abundant natural gifts around us. This endeavour could be small or big; what really matters is engaging the mind to provide wealth and employment opportunities using the very simple things around us that we have been taking for granted. One of these things that the Adamawa people take for granted is dairy, or simply put, milk. Yes milk. As was discussed in our last article, Adamawa State is endowed with high concentration of livestock. This invariably means so much potential for the making of dairy products for commercial purpose.  Dairy product summarily means ‘anything food made out of milk from animals like cows, goats, sheep, camels’. In some other climes, they get dairy products also from ‘buffaloes and horses’. Some of these products are gotten through simple process of heating or pasteurization. According to Foodsafety.gov, “pasteu...

Tannery consist the conversation of raw hide or animal skin into leather for manufacture of products ranging from shoes, bags, belt, furniture, car interior, strap for wrist watches and other leather accessories. Tannery has been an important part of processing leather into finished products for world consumption. The importance of tannery was emphasized by the launch of Tannery of the year award programme for global tanning industry in 2009. This is to promote the use of leather material in car and aeroplane interiors etc. In April, 2014, according to Wikipedia, two tanneries to feature being Bojos Tanning, Santiago, Dominican Republic, and JBS Couros, Itumbiara, Goias, Brazil. Reports on these two finalists will appear in the April-May, 2014 issue of World Leather. Africa  too is not left alone in tanning business, “the domestic livestock population of Ethiopia is estimated today at some 40 million heads of cattle, 25 million of sheep and 24 million goats, yielding to the t...

Open letter to the Emir of Kano

Image
His royal highness, The Emir of Kano, Kano Emirate council. Allah juttu’nu on balde, Sir, We are all grieving from incessant attacks on us and our places of worship, schools and markets. These attacks don’t seem to come to an end or even subside. We feel this new bold move is influenced by you calling civilians to defend each other and the disapproval of the Senate for the elongation of the state of emergency imposed on Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States. It all appears those murderers want the continuation of bloodshed and that is why they are feeling threatened by your call to our collective defence. But history will judge you and the present Legislative arm of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as defenders of their representative. I am writing to you so that you can continue to amplify and bring up ways for the generality of people to be able to identify terror suspects and stop them in time before they harm us. I am writing to you because people listen to you both in Ni...

ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (3)

For a long time domestic and international observers in politics and socio-economy have been offering analysis that will influence the handlers of our prosperity to diversify our Country’s economy. They have foreseen the widening tear in the mono-economy which relies heavily on oil; from a little tear it has become in shreds. Dwindling oil reserves, falling markets, oil theft and massive corruption seems to be some contending forces dragging the economy to doldrums.    Ironically even with the World Bank consultants running the economy in Nigeria, they have woefully failed to be proactive in slowing down the ‘free negative sliding’ of the economy. For this, they have received a series of knocks on the head.    Atiku Abubakar, a leading presidential aspirant in Nigeria criticised the recent austerity measures announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), saying “We should no longer continue to build our castle in the air” referring to the proposed crude b...

Lesson from Ferguson

Image
Ferguson is a city in St Louis county of Missouri United States of America. This city came to media attention after a police man shot Micheal Brown, an 18 year old defenceless boy in August, 2014. The issue here is not even about the colour of the shooter  or the victim but the fact that the kid was unarmed. This outrage has ignited riots across the US and across different colours of people. Aljazeera reported that "Angry protesters overran barricades and taunted police in Ferguson, with some chanting "murderer" and others throwing stones and bottles, as police car windows were smashed and protesters tried to set vehicles ablaze" CNN also narrated how "In New York, a protesters spanning an array of races and ages filled Times Square with their hands up, some chanting, "Don't shoot." In Washington, a crowd including prep school students lay silently on a sidewalk, as if dead. And in Boston, even jail inmates joined in the protest silent...

Buhari or Kwankwaso?

Image
I am really not decided on who to vote between Gen. Buhari and Kwankwaso. I am 21 years old and I am originally from Anambra State but I was born and bred in Kano State. I didn't know anything When the General was president.  All I hear is that he is not a corrupt person.  And I also hear that he is very uncompromising.  But in democracy there must be a lot of give and take. On the other hand the Governor of Kano State has done well within a democratic set up. I like him because he has been abled to control the chaotic traffic situation in Kano. People never thought this could be possible but he did. The creation of KAROTA has created employment as well as discipline in driving. In fact it is because of that I decided to learn how to drive. Jane Kingsley, Anambra State. one of the new Kano flyovers

I will vote Kwankwoso

Image
I must definitely vote Kwankwoso out of all presidential contestants in Nigeria.  His achievements is unprecedented in the country. The Kano State Governor has built new schools and renovated others across the State, including a brand new university that is fully funded and functional. He has taken the girl child and almajiri education to a new high. He has also sponsored students abroad to study various disciplines ranging from aviation to medicine. No Northern Governor, living or dead, has completely transformed the educational status of Kano people within 3 years like Kwankwoso! My vote definitely is for Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwoso. Anas Hashim Bauchi State Kwankwoso in red cap

I will vote for Atiku Abubakar

Image
The most singular reason why I would vote for the Turakin Adamawa is because he has articulated the focus of his would-be-administration into a policy document which he is taking time to promote widely by presenting it to the numerous APC delegates across the country. This is the first of its kind where presidential hopefuls are showcasing a comprehensive policy document as a road map for development. This shows a strategic planning and dedication to the important task ahead. I am yet to read the document myself but neither did I read criticism arising from its content. Note: Tell us one reason why you want to vote the  presidential candidate of your choice and we will publish it our blog. Send your reason via hammanash@yahoo.com including your name and State of origin.

Tambuwal to be arrested?

Image
The media is awash with claims that Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) have separately ordered the arrest of Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker of the house of Assembly for breaching police cordon. I have never given it a serious thought until someone sent me this email; "What will be your reactions if Tambuwal is finally arrested and Ali Modu Sheriff, Shema, Asari dokubo and Ihejerika are still moving around freely?" This thought provoking questions is now for ordinary Nigerians to react to. What would be your reaction?

Coca Cola dangerous to health?

Image
I was bombarded by host of emails and private phone calls when I wrote an article about Kidney disease  http://hammanash.blogspot.com/2014/11/kidney-disease-lot-of-us-are-vulnerable.htm   They all want to know what kind of damage soda drinks do exactly to the body. I am yet to get details about other soda drinks but I got this about Coke from yournewswire.com: http://yournewswire.com/20-practical-uses-for-coca-cola-proof-it-doesnt-belong-in-the-human-body

ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (2)

Fear and hope drives us to greatness. The fear of attack by others make us strong and crave for a better secured society. The fear of death strenghtened our believes and make us fateful. The fear of poverty drives us to revolutionise the creation of wealth; to see billions of naira where others only see nothing. Atiku Abubakar an indigene of Adamawa State, a multi-billionaire and a former vice President, is a water vendor. Yes, water! He is making millions of naira from the production and sale of bottled water. He has added value to it by branding, bottling and purification. Otherwise it is simply water. In Adamawa State, there is so much wealth beneath our feet. We need to look harder, especially now that there is so much poverty and unemployment starring us at our faces. Now more than ever, we have the chance to see water where others see dust. It is often said that when people are hungry their thinking goes to sleep. Contrary to this i think when people are hungry and poor...

Timawus Mathias, please don't buy it!

Uncle Tim has been some sort of a role model for so many young chaps like me. His analysis of public discourse has most times been rich and sharp. He has been subject of great information to people of Adamawa State especially the current refugee status we have been thrown into by boko haram terrorist. But please uncle Tim do not buy into the crap the Government is selling to us about the so called 'screening' of the victorious vigilantes. You mean the Government didn't know the vigilantes existed until now? Vigilantes have been operating along side security outfits for a long time. They have existed side by side with our traditional institutions as 'yan banga, sarkin baka etc especially in the Northern part of the country. The Government have been screening them for a long time.  The various traditional councils have been screening them; they know all their members hence no fear of infiltration. Screening the vigilantes in this our of need would entail re...

Dr. Udenta of TAN desperate

Jonathanians are providing longer and stronger chain for the President to shackle himself tightly with. The defence of their principal as the election is coming nearer seem to be getting louder but desperate even as it is becoming clearer that they are out of good options. The interview of Udenta O. Udenta by Leadership recently is an eye opener. Hear him: What do you make of the criticism that trailed the declaration? The declaration came at the right time except that there are some people who know what the rest didn’t know – that there will be a terror attack on the eve of the President Jonathan’s date with history. But in a more serious sense , those who criticised the declaration are indirectly aiding the terrorists in causing a change in our national values of courage, determination and resolute will. 1.if you criticise Jonathan's declaration you are aiding terrorist? 2. Who are those people that know what the rest of us don't know? The commander in-...

“Nigeria first, Nigeria always, let’s do it together.”???

“Nigeria first, Nigeria always, let’s do it together.”- this is the new campaign slogan for President Goodluck Ebele AZIKIWE Jonathan (he forgot the name Mainasara given too him by the North in 2011, like he always does over issues troubling the North). What does Nigeria first really mean in the slogan? This must be emphasising putting the country first before any other interest. Please tell us what you think about this campaign slogan.

ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (1)

ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (1) It is often said that third world countries are areas for the collection of raw materials by the Developed world to service their production glutony. Seemingly so, is also the claim by third world countries that the stagnation in their respective economies is largely due to the parasitic nature of the advanced economies. The failure of most economies of the under developed countries is lack of patriotic leadership owing to faulty emergence of political actors. Who have repeatedly moulded the state apparatus around their individual egos, rather than wrap it around collective nationalistic interests. Africa is blessed with all the factors of production; land, labour, capital etc. Nigeria, for instance, is said to be giant of Africa not only because of its physical size, but also population and natural resources. The only factior missing has been an organised leadership to drive home the need to optimally utilize all the endowments. Both fo...

This is war

THIS IS WAR! Thousands of people being killed or displaced; children killed and some abducted. Women raped, killed and some taken away from their husbands and children. Many towns razed down, houses, markets, shops burnt to ashes. In spite of all these no succour has been offered by our dear President? Where is the Obama in him? Where is the Lee kwan Yew in him? Where is the Martin Luther King in him? Instead he is busy in his quest for another 4 years. Another four years to allow the Shekau caliphate to take over all of Adamawa State? To keep quiet until boko haram invade Taraba State? Gombe State? And Bauchi State? Jonathan's declaration means war for us. Your weapon is your voter's card, #votehimOut! And if for any reason they decide to stop us from voting, then we will challenge it. I hope this message gets to all PDP members, you too are accomplices until you come, individually or in groups, to denounce your association with those aiding and abetting or keeping sile...

Who is afraid of Ngilari?

Since the coming back of democracy in 1999, Adamawa State has accepted Various forms of impositions by those presiding over the political space. They have never fail to bring up anointed candidates of their choice, most often, against the collective desire of the larger population. In 1999, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, like a magical trick out of a hat, brought up Boni Haruna from no where. Mr . Haruna went to become Governor for eight years. During the two terms that Boni held sway, Atiku Abubakar never saw, nor believed criticisms against the State Governor. And the words of Atiku was golden while they lasted in power. It was widely alleged that Atiku initially built his famous African University (AUN) with Adamawa State resources. After Boni came Nyako in 2007. Murtala Nyako's emergence was premised on the need, at that time, to securely put a lid over Atiku's overbearing political influence in the State. This feat was ochestrated by no other person but Prof...

Kidney disease; a lot of us are vulnerable

Kidney Disease; all of us are vulnerable My mother died in June, 2013, due to kidney disease complications. All of a sudden my eldest aunt is diagnosed with similar complications last week. She is currently going through dialysis procedures in federal Medical centre, Yola, Adamawa State. These two incidences have greatly hightened my fear that i may have similar disease later in my life. Or there is a possibility it runs in my familar. So i quickly started to look up information about kidney disease. Even though i found out that kidney disease does not transmit from parents to children, What i discovered even shocked me more; because a lot of us are vulnerable. Kidneys are two organs located on either side of the back of the abdominal cavity. Its most important function is to regulate the fluid balance in the body. It adjusts, for instance, the urine volume excreted daily by adjusting the amount on cold times which is usually more and less urine during hot seasons because the fluids es...

Why do soldiers run away from battle?

What seemed to be hot in media coverage is the continued trial of military personnel who had either abandoned orders or mutinied. Recent reports alleged that the brigade commander or the 23rd armoured brigade, col. O.O Popoola and some senior officers are being questioned on their roles in the fall of Mubi. What is most shocking to observers was the ease in which the boko haram terrorist ovee ran three whole brigades stationed around Mubi; The 213 brigade, 234 brigade and the 21 support group. What is making the Nigerian soldiers run away from battle? How come we have been seeing public trial of military men? And no public trial of captured terrorists? These and many unanswered questions seemed to be what emboldens the insurgents. One thing stands clear since the fight against terrorism started in Nigeria; battle ready soldiers have been denied the necessary support for the war campaign. It has contributed to their low morale hence successive the defeat against them. The Senate must f...

Richard Branson in Haiti

Mohammed Yunus of the famous Grameen bank, Richard Branson of the wealthy Virgin brand have teamed up with President Bill Clinton to plant over a million trees in Haiti in order to slow down deforestation. This project, according Branson's blog on Google+, is to help create entrepreneurs and provide 200 jobs in the small Haitian country. Branson was some time in Nigeria to promote the Virgin air Nigeria but some how fell out with the increasing bottle necks of doing business in Nigeria. The cost of doing business, rise in corruption among Government officials have contributed immensely in the slow expansion of direct foreign investment to Nigeria. Even domestic entrepreneurs have continued to suffer losses because of corruption in Government, abrupt policy changes, and lack of infrastructure that supports the growth of businesses Grameen bank for instance, have enjoyed wide customer base in Asia and even have a strong presence in New York. This could be replayed in Nigeria and o...

Nigerian Senate in tantrums

The Senate once again today exposed their dirty linen to the consternation of world public. The rupture in the House was because 'daddy' refused to give them their usual 'candy'. Imagined Senators in attendance boycotted the consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF)? And even stood down a letter from the President imploring them to comfirm Mr Joseph O. Nnenna as a Deputy Governor (CBN)? All other Senate activities of the Senate were jettisoned. Reason? The President has given an automatic blanket ticket to PDP Governors especially those with interest on senatorial positions.  This means several of the current senators would be unseated by the Governors. This obviously did not go down well with the legislators. This has exposed the fact that the President has long been massaging their ego no wonder they have consistently turn deaf ears to the President's constitutional breaches; they have not heard, they have not seen. Nigerians know that thei...

Shameless Diplomacy

I could not contain my disbelieve when I heard that President Jonathan is among the ECOWAS delegation to mediate in Burkina Faso's unrest. Jonathan has refused to come out strongly against the people terrorising the North Eastern part of Nigeria. He has refused to give the military the needed war equipment to crush the insurgency in spite the trillions of Naira budgeted for the cause. He has vehemently refused to visit the crises areas but he has the diplomatic courage to visit Ouagadougou? I wish I can peep into the President's head to read his mind, what was he thinking? Is he telling Nigerians that Burkinabes are better than the people of the North East Nigeria?

Panic in Yola

Report reaching us is confirming that there is a sense of tension and panic among residents of  Yola, the Adamawa State capital. Some travellers we met along Mayo Belwa road claimed they were fleeing from possible in Yola. An elderly man among the convoy of cars said "when they (referring to boko haram) attacked Michika and Madagali they boasted that they will go to Mubi, and now it is history". The Media reported about that possibility but no one listened until now that is too late. Too late because to recapture Mubi would entail massive destruction of property since the military is going for aerial bombardment of boko haram hideouts. Statements coming out of Mubi also indicate an alleged rumour of the terrorist marching down to capture Yola hence the panic is not unfounded. We are appealing to residents to be calm and be more vigilant of strange people around them. They should immediately report unusual movement of groups unknown to them in their communities. Politica...

Ranting of a Presidential aid

“those who make peaceful change inevitable will make violent change inevitable”. President John Kennedy. The above statement was said to have been re emphasised some time in 2011 by vice president Atiku Abubakar. Again, the former vice president had a press conference on the aftermath of the take over of the chief of Defence Staffs' home town by boko haram. Abubakar accused the Government and the military of not doing enough to curtail the advances of the terrorist. Obviously, Doyen Okupe- a presidential aid, irked by the stinging truths exposed in the press conference, attacked Atiku Abubakar for utterances that supports insurgency. Okupe accused that the famous President Kennedy quote   caused the escalation of terrorism in the North East of Nigeria. This type of accusations only continue to expose the presidency that it is only good in grasping at straws instead of substance. He should have defended the Government through the publishing of its concerted effort at dealing wi...

Youths, jobs and Burkina Faso

The survival democracy rests on developing the youths; It has become a matter of urgency to provide jobs and create meaningful employment opportunities for the youths. They no doubt occupy higher percentages in most of our societies. They also consist higher numbers in economic labours around the world. Developed nations thrive more on the backbone of providing a sense of 'doing something' for the youths. These covers mostly spheres in banking and finance, law, medicine and pharmaceutical, manufacturing and technology related jobs etc In Africa, there is a high inclination towards jobs in agriculture, which can provide millions of employment and export opportunity. Global analyst also try to redirect efforts of African Governments towards manufacturing and tech jobs. it is the job of advisers seating besides African head of States and Presidents to emphasise the need for foreign investment in agriculture, manufacturing and production. In Burkina Faso, youths successfully e...
