ADAMAWA: Wealth right under our feet (5)

What we are trying to do is to awaken people’s consciousness towards redirecting their energy into creating economic activities using the abundant natural gifts around us. This endeavour could be small or big; what really matters is engaging the mind to provide wealth and employment opportunities using the very simple things around us that we have been taking for granted.

One of these things that the Adamawa people take for granted is dairy, or simply put, milk. Yes milk. As was discussed in our last article, Adamawa State is endowed with high concentration of livestock. This invariably means so much potential for the making of dairy products for commercial purpose.

Dairy product summarily means ‘anything food made out of milk from animals like cows, goats, sheep, camels’. In some other climes, they get dairy products also from ‘buffaloes and horses’. Some of these products are gotten through simple process of heating or pasteurization. According to Foodsafety.gov, “pasteurization is a process that kills harmful bacteria by heating milk to a specific temperature”. It also said that “Raw milk can harbour dangerous microorganisms, such as Salmonella, E.coli and Listeria that can pose serious health risks...”

In Adamawa, the consumption of animal milk is mostly traditional. Meaning cows get milked and sold as milk in consistent consumption. The reversal of this trend could mean the setting up of dairy factories where the animals can be milked by mechanical effort and thereafter turned into commercial products that can be sold both in the domestic markets and for export.

There are various products that come out of dairy milk. It could be slowly frozen and add emulsifying additives to make ice cream. It can be fermented by streptococcus and other bacteria such as Lactobacillus etc to make Yogurt. Cream can be added to milk to make Cream Cheese. Other products can be Butter or Butter milk, Evaporated Milk, Infant formula, Condensed Milk, Skim Milk, powdered Milk, Custard, chocolate. Also exotic cuisines can be made out of milk as they do in India, Russia and other parts of Asia.

I have had to encounter the daily intake of milk in the house while growing up; it was so religious and rigorous. It is now that I found out the health benefit is so huge I must recommend it religiously too to my children. What we all need is impressive levels of protein and calcium in our system which some dairy products provide abundantly for enhance bone density, reduces chances of diabetes and play a strong role in weight loss. Other products are highly laced with vitamin D which is good in calcium absorption and helps lower the risk of blood pressure.

A rich market lies in the production of these dairy products. Government can partner with factory owners to provide some of these products free to school children. The children get enormous protein from it while it continues to motivate them to always be in school; Factories get to sale their product at a discounted prize to the Government.
