CAN is not being sincere

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State said on Thursday that over 500 of its members were kidnapped in the last two years, adding that the body had paid over N300m as ransom.

This singular act of CAN has contributed in further institutionalizing ransom. When criminals know for sure that CAN will pay they will surely be in business. It is not only that,  I remembered a financial institution that was owing a choir mistress in one church. They were advised to seek her pastor's audience in that regard. And the Church paid off the loan on behalf of the woman.

It is not rampant in Muslim communities for a mosque to consistently be paying off it's members financial liabilities. Perhaps because Muslims do not pay money to become members of a worship center or pay a compulsory–like tithe.

This is not to say that Muslims have not been victims of kidnappings. In fact,  it is believed that Muslims have been kidnapped more in Kaduna for instance, than any other religion.

In their statement, Rev. Joseph Hayab, the State Chairman of CAN, "warned against the activities of bandits, armed robbers and other criminal element in the state who had turned to kidnappings, saying in one village alone, the church paid N20m."

These criminals have insider information, they know what they are doing. And one of the ways in curbing this dangerous activity is to engage in a holistic approach in stead of tackling  cases in isolation. The amount of money spent by CAN could have been used for a superior technology that could trace and triangulate suspects hideouts.

“The people have moved out of some settlements completely and we have closed down our churches because of the activities of the kidnappers”. Rev. Hayab further lamented. But it is on record that CAN is particular about their shrinking numbers than coming together to form a workable solution along with the right government agencies and other religious bodies.

Criminals, whether kidnappers or bandits,  do not discriminate on religion or tribe. But CAN is always quick to apportion religious connotation to our collective security problems, or any national issue that needs all our resolve. Brainstorming on the statement of CAN last night in Lagos,  Pastor Bamidele of King James new ministries countered CAN by reminding them it is one of CAN members that is defending the father of kidnappers, Evans. Referring to Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans. It is also on record that the Nigerian police have rescued thousands of kidnapped victims without resort to ransom. Pastor Bamidele querried the reason why CAN is emphasizing on payments they have made with out allowing the police to do its work.

The statement of CAN is coming at a time the country is grappling with a number of security challenges. The president had promised to improve the situation through the use of advanced technology and had also drawn a template that would allow State government the use of drones for effective surveillance.
