Fan milk feeding Alcohol to Muslims
aleem works with a taxi-hailing service company. He mostly closes late from work, as such gets tired all the time until he discovered the use of energy drinks.
Energy drinks are produced to increase mental, physical and energy performance with combinations of caffeine, sugar, amino acids derivative and herbal extracts. Most of these combined ingredients contain high level of stimulants that influences alertness.
Saleem's favorite is Bullet. For two years he has found solace and needed energy boost in the use of bullet. But lately, instead of increased energy, the drink makes him sleepy and dizzy. Upon careful scrutiny, He found out that for over a year he has been consuming alcohol.
Bullet in black tin is made up of substantial amount of whiskey. The bullet in blue tin is made up of taurine.
Experts believe that "taurine in energy drinks is most likely due to the effect it is thought to have on mental and athletic performance. Taurine supplementation has been linked to improved exercise capacity and may help individuals to meet physical goals." It is also said that athlete deaths in Europe have been linked to energy drinks containing taurine and caffeine.
Because beverage companies are becoming desperate for innovation, more of their products are leaving traditional blends and focusing on sales rather than satisfaction. That is why more brands are containing alcoholic and aphrodisiac mixtures.
That is not all, even the traditional yogurt drinks that we have come to cherish in Northern Nigeria have disappointed consumers. One of such is the popular Fan Milk.
Fan Milk Plc was incorporated a year after Nigeri's independence and has been churning out products like "frozen strawberry yoghurts, chocolates, ice cream, snacks, ice lollies and citrus drinks under the following brand names; FanYogo, FanChoco, FanIce, FanDango and FanPop."
Fan Milk surprisingly has a factory in Kano, which targets Muslim population with their newly introduced alcoholic brand of FANYOGO.
"We used to trust fan milk and drink it alot, especially with the fierce heat season in Kano. But to our shock and disappointment, we discovered that so may of our children are taking alcohol in disguise." A Kano resident cried out.
Fan milk has taken advantage of their long stay in Kano and has established good relationship in Northern Nigeria. But they have taken advantage of the illiterate young children and sold FANYOGO to them which contains 12.5 alcohol.
Kano State Government was in the news few days ago for destroying alcohol worth more than N200m. It should also step up concern and ban the sale of all Fan Milk products.
"We can no longer trust them", a distribution agent said. The sale, transportation, warehousing and consumption of alcohol is Haram. May Allah forgive us and curse those that have been deceiving us".
We are calling all concerned agencies of government in Northern Nigeria to investigate this and take necessary actions against alcoholic beverages and drinks.
Alcoholic contents must be boldly written both in Hausa and Arabic on such drinks before it is allowed to be produced and marketed in the North.
