Tinubu and the absent President
Contrary to the views of many, Lagos State has largely remained a slum despite boasting of consistent urban renewal plan, allegedly coordinated and driven by former Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
The said plan was the borne of contention and acrimony between the erstwhile Governor and former Governor Ambode who had refused to bend to Tinubu's overbearing interference in the administration of the state. It was the god-like dominance that led to Ambode's removal for a second term contest.
Bola Tinubu had claimed that the Lagos master plan is bigger than anyone, not even a Governor. Any Governor that will not adhere to it must give way. Ambode gave way, however, Lagos city has trailed behind at number 18 on the list of 25 most beautiful cities in Africa and the highest in terms of crime; a legacy of Tinubu no doubt.
The recent Edo State Governorship election was a warning shot to the towering political ambition of Bola Tinubu, as #Edo no be Lagos trended on the internet.
Politicians have also warned Tinubu to stay on his lane. Meaning that his influence only flooded Lagos, and a few Southwest States. No doubt he has a coterie of loyalists and god-sons, but how does that help with the national plan?
How does the Tinubu influence helped the people of the North West? On Saturday alone, more than 40 people were abducted in Gobirawan Cali, a town in Zamfara State. The abduction took place in broad daylight around 3:30PM while Tinubu and his gang were pushing for good governance in Edo State.
It is not only Edo is not Lagos that will happen in 2023, but there is going to be widespread resistance to Nigeria is not Lagos by well meaning Nigerians. We may not have the power to stop them from winning elections, but God will disgrace and punish them for allowing innocent people to be abducted in their homes, farms and on the highways. This have continued with no help in sight. And you want the same people to lead us for another 8 years?
Edo incident shall be replicated especially in the North where the misgovernance is hitting the hardest. We rejected Goodluck Jonathan because our lives matters, it still does. And nothing phenomenal have changed apart from the increases in our living conditions. And for 5 years we have listened to promises that never came and those delegating us never questioned for answers. Therefore, those that are presiding over these gloomy years must not come forward to ask for our votes again.
Two things will stand out in 2023 as regard the presidential election. One, It is not going to be about political party anymore, but about the individual who is going to salvage Nigeria from its multiple curse as presided by the APC.
Secondly, it is not going to be about capacity. President Buhari has the capacity to make Nigeria better than what it is now. He was head of state, Governor and so many other things. How did his capacity helped us as a country? I wish we can stop chasing shadows and hold on to substance. Hold the president for our mess and leave out his appointees because this is a representative democracy. Everything happens with the consent of the president, there should be a mechanism for checking those he has appointed. The buck stops at his table.
Tinubu must exhibit his leadership acumen by providing solutions to the myriad of problems strangulating the North if he wants our votes. Just like Buhari, everything would stop if he becomes president.
The present Buhari seems to be weak and absent. Believe me, the country is on autopilot.
